Making your own simple sour mix elevates this classic cocktail.

This recipe was sent to me by my mom, Bonnie, but it originally comes from our friend Eric.

It is truly the best margarita recipe. I can never go back to margarita mix or pre-made sour mix. They will forever be inferior.

Also, you can use all lime wedges instead of the mix of lime and lemon if you prefer a more "classic" margarita taste.

The "Perfectly Simple" Margarita

Simple Syrup:
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • 5 lime wedges
  • 2 lemon wedges
  • 1 oz simple syrup
  • 1 oz orange juice
  • 1.5 oz tequila
  • coarse salt and lime wedges for garnish

  1. Make simple syrup as follows:
    1. Place the sugar and water in a small (ideally nonstick) pot.
    2. Bring the mixture to a boil over medium heat, stirring constantly, until the sugar is fully dissolved.
    3. Turn off the heat and let the syrup cool to room temperature.
    4. Set aside 1 oz for your cocktail, then store the rest in a sealed glass jar in the fridge for up to 1 month.
  2. Prepare a cocktail glass by salting the rim and filling with ice.
  3. Muddle lime and lemon wedges with the simple syrup in the bottom of a cocktail shaker.
  4. Add orange juice, tequila, and ice. Shake vigorously.
  5. Strain into prepared glass. Garnish with lime wedge.
